Irene Compoginis is the daughter of Greek immigrants. Around 1915 at the age of 15, her father immigrated to the United States from Vólos, Greece. He worked in the restaurant business. Her mother Kirakula Vantageous, more often called Helen, was born in Greece on the Island of Skopelos. She immigrated to the United States as a young woman with her family. Once settled in Sacramento, her father opened and operated a shoe store. After meeting at the shoe store, Irene's parents married in 1918 and started their family. Irene was born in 1925 in Sacramento, where she stayed until married. Irene and her husband briefly moved to Los Angeles, California but they ultimately returned to Sacramento where they settled and raised their family.
